Cosplay Is Not Consent
At ThunderCon, we celebrate creativity, self-expression, and fandom, but above all, we value respect and consent. Just because someone is in costume does not mean they are giving permission for unwanted attention, touching, or photography. Harassment will not be tolerated.
What Is NOT Okay?
- Touching anyone or their costume without clear, enthusiastic consent.
- Taking photos or videos without permission. Always ask before snapping a picture.
- Making inappropriate or suggestive comments about someone’s appearance or costume.
- Following, stalking, or intimidating attendees, guests, or staff.
- Disregarding a request to stop a conversation or leave someone alone.
What IS Okay?
- Complimenting a costume respectfully (e.g., “That’s an awesome cosplay!”).
- Asking before taking photos and respecting the answer—no means no.
- Respecting personal space and moving aside in crowded areas.
- Being mindful of how your words and actions affect others.
Reporting Harassment
If you experience or witness inappropriate behavior:
- Tell a ThunderCon staff member immediately (staff will be wearing lanyards, we will also be available at the welcome table and prop safety table).
- We will listen and take action. ThunderCon staff are trained to handle these reports seriously and discreetly.
- Harassers may be removed from the event without refund and banned from future conventions.
Photography & Video Etiquette
- Ask first! Do not take photos of anyone without their permission.
- Respect private moments. Eating, resting, or personal time is not an invitation for photos.
- Cosplay does not mean performance. Not every cosplayer wants to be on camera—respect their choice.
- If someone declines a photo, respect their decision. Move on with kindness.
Cosplay & Boundaries
- A costume is not an invitation for unwanted attention. No matter how someone is dressed, they deserve respect.
- No touching props, accessories, or costumes without permission. These are often fragile, handmade, and not for handling.
- If someone sets a boundary, respect it immediately.
Consequences for Violating This Policy
ThunderCon has a zero-tolerance policy for harassment. If you violate this policy, you may face:
- Immediate removal from the event without a refund.
- Bans from future ThunderCon events.
- Potential law enforcement involvement if necessary.
